Your Guide to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 Features

Launched in July 2024, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is the newest addition to Samsung’s foldable phone range.

The flip market in general has made considerable improvements in the past few years, now introducing mid-range and premium models alongside more budget-friendly devices. Today, the latest clamshell Galaxy foldable joins the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold and the cheaper Motorola Razr Plus Sixth-generation.

But do the brand new Snapdragon chipset and suite of features deserve the $1,099 price point? Should you choose the Flip 6 over its rivals? And is it worth the upgrade from the Z Flip 5? In this review, we’ll explore the Galaxy Z Flip 6’s top features to answer all of these questions for you.

Durable Design

A key problem with any new contribution to the foldable phone market is the hinge mechanism, which significantly reduces the durability of the devices – including the Galaxy Z Flip 6. That’s why we recommend investing in a rugged phone case to absorb any impact from accidental drops.

What’s great about Samsung’s newest flip phone is the focus on tackling these durability issues. It features an Armor Aluminum frame and Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus 2, a material with improved drop performance on rough surfaces like concrete.

However, the new floating design makes it lighter and more compact than any other Z Flip device, so you won’t need to worry about bulk in your pocket, either.

The Flip 6 adds dust resistance with its IP48 rating, something that previous models were missing. This means the phone is protected in depths of water up to 1 meter and from dust particles larger than 1mm.

It also swaps the glossy finish for a more premium matte one that’s available in Blue, Mint, Yellow, and Silver Shadow, plus three online exclusive colors: Peach, White, and Crafted Black.

Bright Dual Displays

The Z Flip 6 offers two distinctive displays. The  3.4-inch outer cover screen and an inner 6.7-inch main display provide a fast 120Hz maximum refresh rate and a high-quality 2640 x 1080 resolution. The outer screen can be used to quickly view notifications and add customizable widgets to access your favorite apps, without opening the lid.

Folding phones are known for having a crease through the center of the screen, which is a particular disadvantage of this device type. But the good news is that this has been significantly reduced with the Z Flip 6, now making it hardly noticeable.

Another fantastic feature is the main screen’s 2600-nit brightness that rivals the Google Pixel 9 series. Switch between Vivid, Natural, and Dark modes for the display to set your ideal color balance – even at night or in low light conditions.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Chip

One of the most significant upgrades to the Z Flip 6 is Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, a chipset that delivers a 30% performance boost

Combined with the large 4000 mAh battery, 4GB more RAM, and advanced central and graphics processing units, this offers much better power efficiency than the previous model. The Flip 6 has an all-day battery life and up to 3 hours more video playback, making it the longest-lasting battery on a Flip device yet.

Samsung’s 6th-generation flip device is also the first to feature a large vapor cooling chamber. The chamber effectively diffuses heat to prevent overheating and maintain a more stable performance.

Galaxy AI Features

Galaxy AI was first introduced with the S24 range in 2024. Today, all Samsung devices, including the Z Flip 6, are powered by this user-friendly AI assistant, which works particularly well with the FlexWindow for enhanced productivity and creativity.

A great example is Interpreter, which displays your language on one screen and translations on the other for more seamless conversations. Other key Galaxy AI features you’ll enjoy on the Flip 6 include:

  • Live Translate: Enjoy real-time translations during phone calls.

  • Transcript Assist: Transcribes conversations into editable text on Galaxy Notes.

  • Chat Assist: Send messages directly from the FlexWindow by selecting one of the Suggested Replies.

  • Circle to Search: Circle text or an object and Google will search the web for relevant results.

  • Google Gemini: Samsung has partnered with Google to offer the Gemini AI assistant on the Z Flip 6.

Dual Rear Cameras

Unlike other Samsung Galaxy or Apple iPhone Pro flagships, the Flip 6 doesn’t include a Telephoto sensor.

However, it does have the first 50MP camera on a Z Flip phone, upgraded from the Z Flip 5’s 12MP sensor. This is great for taking portrait photos with an even higher resolution than before. The Main camera is paired with 12MP Ultrawide and 10MP Selfie lenses, plus impressive 4K video recording, to offer an overall quality setup.

Galaxy AI features also extend to the camera. FlexCam automatically zooms in and out and displays handy photo previews on the FlexWindow, helping you take hands-free selfies with ease. Nightography mode makes it easy to capture details in the dark, while the ProVisual Engine processes photos for a brighter and sharper image quality.

Final Thoughts

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 certainly offers upgrades over its predecessor. This includes a higher-quality main camera enhanced with Galaxy A, plus an all-day battery life courtesy of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

Invest in the Flip 6 to enjoy enhanced impact protection and water resistance too. However, durability remains the biggest drawback due to the vulnerability of the hinge mechanism. That’s something you’ll need to assess when investing in any foldable phone – even those like the Galaxy Z Flip 6 series with a stronger FlexHinge.

Overall, the device delivers an excellent range of features, with Galaxy AI continuing to create a more personalized experience. There’s no doubt that the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 is one of the best flip phone devices available right now and makes a great choice if you’re looking to upgrade.
